Growing Saffron in Containers at Home

Growing Saffron in Containers at Home

1. Select containers: Choose deep containers with drainage holes, at least 8 inches deep, preferably terracotta or clay pots.
2. Prepare potting mix: Use well-draining potting mix with organic matter and consider adding compost or aged manure for nutrients.
3. Plant saffron corms: Plant corms in late summer or early fall, spacing them 3 inches apart in the potting mix, and water thoroughly after planting.
4. Choose sunny location: Place containers in a sunny location with 6 to 8 hours of sunlight per day, protecting them from strong winds.
5. Water and maintain: Keep soil consistently moist but not waterlogged, watering when the top inch of soil is dry, and mulch the soil surface to conserve moisture and suppress weeds.
6. Harvest saffron: Harvest saffron stigmas early in the morning when flowers have fully opened, carefully plucking them with tweezers and drying them in a warm, well-ventilated area.
